Photos Your Kids Took

Hi!  I have no idea who took this picture of me!  I just downloaded about a million photos from the kids' camera, and here is a sampling.  Some of them cracked me up, and I thought you might like to see them too.  I like how they let you know what the kids think are important.  Little accomplishments and happy times.

After reading so many rhyming Dr. Seuss books, we had to write one ourselves!  Be sure to read this fun book with your Dr. Bug!

Workshop Rundown: 2/19

 I honor of Abraham Lincoln, we built with Lincoln Logs!  These can be tricky to fit together.  The kids found them very different to build with than Legos.

Using photos of the recycled robots constructed last week, the kids wrote stories about their robots.  These robots had many adventures from fighting bad guys to being very fashionable!   After writing their stories, some chose to read them to the class.  Be sure to read these fun stories with your little author at home!

 Our letter study this week was X.  We talked about how X only says its name at the end and middle of words.  To prove the point, the kids completed an X book and then used the words in sentences.

 We wrote about what we would do if elected the President of the United States. Our future is so bright!  With Brilliant Bugs as the President, everyone will be cared for and the world will be a better place!

Of course, we also had to draw a Presidential self-portrait.  Lots of power ties and high heeled shoes!

 As we continue to learn to sound out words to read, the students made words using the short E sound (as in "egg").  After making and sounding out a word, it was written on a recording sheet.  We are beginning to understand the relationship between letter and sounds, how words are formed, the difference between real words and nonsense words, and consonant blends such as "st" and "sm."

Valentine Fun!

 We started our day off with a performance from The Quicksilver Barbershop Quartet - what a treat! 

 Valentine Discovery was so much fun!

During our party we went on a super fun scavenger hunt around GSL.  What fun!  Ms. Vest gave us a clue to the next location.

 Mrs. Cox from the library was in on the game too!

 Walking back to the lower school.  We finally ended back up in the old cafeteria for cupcakes with Cheech, the bird.

 We made these sweet Valentine mice.

 Mrs. West led us through the steps to make a mouse.

 Alex says, "She said to push them together really hard!"

Finally, we opened our Valentines!

Workshop Rundown: 2/11

 After reading a sweet book, Somebody Loves you, Mr. Hatch, everyone chose a friend to write a secret Valentine to.  It's fun being a "secret admirer." 

The look on everyone's faces when they got their Valentines was priceless!

 Having fun with the letter R making Recycled Robots.  Yes, we used hot glue! 

 Playing math games on the iPad.  Hungry Fish was a favorite.

 Explaining the difference between a paper heart and a human heart.

"It doesn't move."  "The real heart moves."

Sorting short E and short I words.  These sounds are very similar and can be hard to distinguish between.  Go over this workshop with your child.  Can you think of more short E and short I words?
