Each week the kids participate in six different workshops. These activities reinforce concepts from our curriculum, thematic units, arts, and cooperative learning. Here's a peek of what we did this week.
iPads! Everyone was so excited to work with the iPads. We have three iPads in our classroom to share. During workshop time, there are 5 app choices for the kids to choose from ranging from fine motor, alphabet, and math skills.
Each week, we will make High Frequency Word (HFW) cards to take home for practice. The cards will be underlined with either red or green. Red words are words that cannot be sounded out (there are a lot of these!) and green words can be sounded out. Our first 2 words are the and zero - both are red words.
At home, keep the HFW cards in your child's special box for practice. Get into the habit of going through the words a few times a week. As the year goes on, we will give you ideas for using your HFW cards.
We drew our August self-portraits. Each month we will draw a self-portrait. At the end of the year you will get a binder with all the self-portraits for the year - a great SK keepsake!
We are reading! Our first take-home book The Park practices our word "the." For the first part of the year, the books will also have pictures in place of words - this will help the kids to focus on the words we want them to learn.
Each week, please place the new books into the Book Bag your child decorated at school this week. This way, you can find them and read them again and again! Don't worry if you feel your child has memorized the books, that's OK. The key to learning these tricky HFW is practice, practice, practice!
To practice different kinds of stitches, we made bug lacing cards. Sewing is a big part of SK. Many kids have already began to sew little pillows and pouches during free choice time. Next week, we will use real needles to work on a class project.
Yum! Super Snack Mix! Our letter study this week is /S/ and /M/ so we had fun using our sense of taste to help remember the letter sounds. This activity also involved measuring and following directions. Not to mention eating! A recipe card for the mix will be going home in the Thursday folder.
Did your child talk about Workshops this week?
